thursday

i have had a few rough parenting days with boyd.
{and in all fairness, he'd probably say the same thing about me}.
last night i went to bed with a raw throat from getting onto him so much,
{and a little bit of crying on my part}.
and then my mind does tricky things to me like, how in the world will i parent him when he's 10, or 15, and i feel like i just can't do it. and i know better than to get ahead of myself. so kevin came home and i let it all out to him, and somehow i felt better. and then very nicely he told me to go to bed.
when boyd was an infant my mother in law said to me, these are the easy days.
and i didn't believe her. now i do.
who knew little boys could be so sassy and stubborn and trying.
i knew boys were full of energy, but i didn't think my perfect child could test me so much.
thankfully he's cute and funny and loveable, within 5 minutes of all the above.

on top of how i have felt about parenting, life still happens and throws you curveballs on a daily basis.
i pulled out this max lucado book yesterday, and it's funny how god speaks directly to you, when you need it the most.
sometimes life leaves you feeling sad and frustrated with so many {little} things...relationships, broken promises, let downs and disappointments...you know, the usual pity party that is a dangerous party to attend.
i tend to run away from god when i'm feeling down, but i know i should run straight to him instead.
max lucado will tell it like it is, in a positive way. i love his words.
{unfortunately, i hang onto life's disappointments like they are gold. i need to learn to let things go}.

boyd had splash day today, and his last day of pre-k.
i was a little sad when i hugged one of his teachers this morning,
but i love how things seem to work out, all in the right timing.
we were ready for the school year to be over, and now we are ready for a fun summer, and for new beginnings.

i did what i do best, and treated myself to a coffee this morning, after dropping boyd off.

and, after school.

i made this almond chicken casserole tonight, and we loved it. it's a keeper.
it's easy and different, in a good way.
{recipe here}.

i saw this quote today, also perfect timing.

we may not be able to prepare the future for our children,
but we can at least prepare our children for the future.

Being a mama is so tough. I have more and more moments where I feel totally unprepared. Yesterday, I grounded E from gum just like I used to do when she was 4 years old...just because I couldn't think of anything on the fly. Ug.
Love how you keep your perspective and choose to look at the sunny side of life. That Boyd is a honey bear.

Oh Nicolle, you're not alone. We go in cycles like that at our house sometimes too. Times two. Or the boys will be on eachother constantly (I call them the Bickersons) and then I lose my patience and have to try so hard to remember to focus on the positive. My greatest fear is that I'm doing this wrong. But there's no one to tell us what's right. And we're hard on ourselves and beat ourselves up and take out our frustrations on the littles. It's hard, so very hard. But you have a good heart and great perspective and that's where the "right" is for you parenting Boyd. Do you know what he's going to remember years from now? Not what you're beating yourself up over, he's going to remember cupcakes, and camping, and riding four wheelers in the desert. He's going to remember his beautiful mama who gives to others, who is generous and loving and fun.

Oh Nicole, it has helped me to remember that their negative traits, the things that I wish I could change about them, but know its just part of their make up, well those traits can also be really amazing things as well. I pray that God molds them into what he wants alot. Not what I want. Hope you have a fun weekend!

You never make a bad dish... I guess I will be trying this one too!

Parenting is hard-- and its days like that when I truly believe that God has a sense of humor... it seems like right when you are contemplating a safe baby site, they melt your heart into smithereens!!
It is a roller coaster... but the best things in life are.

I love your pictures!! Boyd is too cute!

I often have those "when they are 13, 15" flash forwards and think holy moly we are in for a ride!!!:) so know you are not alone there. sometimes grace for the day is all we can ask for and some days it doesn't even feel like enough. and I find most of our really rough days have way more to do with me then them! how crazy is that...but it's true! (not that they never do wrong...but I know you get what i'm saying!:)) either i'm rushing them, I didn't plan well, i'm preoccupied, trying to do too much "other" stuff, or I'm thinking too much about me and those pity parties you mentioned!!:) being a mama is hard for sure!

that casserole looks yummy. looking up the recipe now:)

love boyd's picture on splash day. his little foot turned out is the cutest! love seeing those little details in a shot.

I know tomorrow was better for you...cause that's the way it goes right?

have a happy day nicolle
